Michael Jordan was a great player.
Unfortunately, he did a lot of damage to many sports teams.
I’m not talking about his play. I am talking about the damage he did by virtue of him being a great player.
After Michael Jordan became so dominant with the Chicago Bulls many sports teams in the NBA and other leagues begin searching for the next Michael Jordan – en extremis.
They begin to covet the superstar who would save their franchise from obscurity – and defeat.
The New York Jets fell victim to this way of thinking.
For the past 50 years with a few exceptions, the Jets have been looking for the Messiah, who would deliver them into the promised land.
They have never found that savior.
Yet they keep on looking.
Currently, the Jets and their fans are upset because the latest so-called messiah, Zach Wilson is not yet the savior they want him to be.
So the fans are reverting to their old habit of cutting and running so that they can get a savior in there real quick to fix things.
They are looking for Carson Wentz.
They are looking for Matt, Ryan
They’re even wishfully speculating that the Minnesota Vikings might deal Kirk Cousins to them.
Hey, what about Sam Darnold?
Well, umm …
Jets fans are desperate.
They want Michael Jordan now.
The important thing to remember about Michael Jordan though is that he was but one member of a very fine team.
And that team was coached by Phil Jackson who knew a thing or two about team play.
Phil Jackson played for one of the finest team-play teams of all time, the New York Knicks.
And the Knicks were the ultimate team-play team.
They had players like Walt Frazier, Willis, Reed, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere, and, of course, Phil Jackson.
Phil Jackson brought that team concept to the Chicago Bulls.
The Chicago Bulls were not a one player team
Scottie Pippen was just as instrumental to their championships as was Michael Jordan. The other players were instrumental as well.
This is something that the Jets fans need to understand.
It’s not enough to get an All-Star quarterback. The rest of the team haa to be a good supporting cast.
Bringing in a savior isn’t going to do anything for the New York Jets.
What’s important for the Jets right now is stability and continuity..
That need for stabilityand continuity supersedes their need for quick fix victories.
TheJets must learn to be a team.
The team is more important than the greatness of any individual.
It was that way with the Chicago Bulls.
Michael Jordan just happened to be the finest player on that team.
Sincerely,
Archer Crosley
