What do the Philadelphia Eagles need to do at this point in time?
Currently, everyone is calling for Nick Sirianni to be fired after the debacle against Tampa Bay.
Immediately.
And that may very well happen.
But what should the Philadelphia Eagles do?
Well, when a team that is moving along at 10-1 suddenly crashes to earth with 1-5 record at the tail end of the season, clearly something catastrophic has occurred.
This is akin to a 737-MAX streaming along fine in the skies suddenly finding itself plummeting to the Earth in a tailspin.
The current wisdom amongst the pundits on television is that the coach should have been able to rescue the team out of this tailspin.
Unfortunately, some situations are not fixable.
When a catastrophic event, happens in aviation, the NTSB gets involved in order to study the crash so that we might learn what went wrong.
Was this an engineering problem? Or was this pilot error?
The Philadelphia Eagles need to take the same approach.
What happened here?
What decisions were made? When were these decisions made? Who made these decisions?
Was this pilot error on the part of the coach and his staff? Or was there something structurally wrong with the team to begin with?
In other words was this a disaster that was going to happen anyway no matter who was the coach?
The Eagles need to find out.
They should assemble a board of dispassionate, disinterested football minds from the outside along with experienced investigators who can comprehensively and intensively interview all the people involved with the team so as to find out what went wrong.
The Eagles need to know.
Other teams need to know.
Reflexively firing the coach without this knowledge may not address the underlying problem.
And then the Eagles will have solved nothing.
Sincerely,
Archer Crosley
